The ICSU Regional Office for Latin American and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is conducting its Steering Committee Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction on 21 November, in parallel with the Workshop “Natural disasters and volcanic, seismic and hydro- meteorological hazards” organized by FELASOFI in San Jose de Costa Rica from 19-21 November 2014.
The Steering Committee Meeting shall discuss on research priorities on Disaster Risk Reduction for the region, and design further strategies to strengthen international research collaboration. Caribbean disaster management expert Dr. Barbara Carby and IRDR SC member Irasema Alcántara-Ayala will cover reports on the preparatory meetings for the World Conference in Sendai 2015: Regional Platform in Guayaquil and preparatory meetings in Geneva.
Other topics such as FORIN capacity building activities, cooperation with IRDR and Inter-American Institute and the establishment of the core group of scientists interested on providing training will also be discussed. IRDR Exec. Director Rudiger Klein and IRDR SC member Irasema Alcántara-Ayala will speak on possibilities for the region to build the regional database needed for the LAC scientific research priorities with IRDR, CODATA / DATA.
Furthermore, ICSU Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean Director, Prof. Dr. Manuel Limonta will talk about funding for multinational, multi-disciplinary research projects in LAC from the Cuauhtémoc Forum.
