An event was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 25 June 2015, jointly organized by the local National Platform for DRR and the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the German National Platform for Disaster Reduction (DKKV), which functions as IRDR National Committee for Germany. The partners presented results of a joint project which aimed to enhance the capacity of the National Platform for DRR in Kyrgyzstan through stronger coordination and collaboration with stakeholders at local, sub-national, national, and international levels.
The German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development funded the project which leveraged intersectional synergies to play a key role in coordinating disaster risk reduction and management at all levels. The work conducted with stakeholders in Kyrgyzstan contextualized DRR as “multi-hazard approaches and cross-border cooperation in order to cope with future challenges such as climate change, the effects of urbanisation and demographic challenges”. That perspective included considering small-scale and slow-onset disasters. The closing event included a final statement by the stakeholders.
Since 2014, DKKV has been working with local partners towards better coordination mechanisms for DRR in the area of preparedness and prevention in the Kyrgyz Republic. The project is part of a broader effort to mobilize a wide range of DRR actors. DKKV collaborates with UN-partner organizations (e.g., UNISDR and UNICEF’s WASH cluster) and humanitarian agencies (e.g., IFRC, Welthungerhilfe) who are all members of DKKV’s “Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee”.
