The Global Sustainable Islands Summit (GSIS) 2025, hosted by Island Innovation in collaboration with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, convened global leaders, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to tackle the pressing challenges of climate resilience and sustainability in island contexts. From 27–29 May, participants explored practical solutions for sustainable water management, renewable energy, food security, and climate-resilient agriculture, while also highlighting innovative strategies to strengthen adaptation and reduce vulnerabilities across Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Dr. Ronald Roopnarine, member of the IRDR Scientific Committee, contributed to several high-level panels on water conservation, food security, and sustainable agriculture. He emphasized that the summit provided an invaluable platform for fostering international partnerships, knowledge exchange, and innovation. “Hosting the Summit in the Caribbean was both symbolic and strategic,” he said. “It elevated the voices of frontline communities and reinforced the importance of solidarity among islands in addressing shared climate and sustainability challenges.”
The outcomes of GSIS 2025 closely align with the mission of IRDR, which promotes transdisciplinary, science-based approaches to understanding and reducing disaster risk. The summit underscored the importance of integrating scientific knowledge with policy and practice to enhance resilience and sustainability in vulnerable island communities worldwide.
