IRDR National Committee in Germany (DKKV) signs MoU with Kyrgyz Republic to strengthen coordination for DRR

The IRDR National Committee in Germany (German Committee for Disaster Reduction – DKKV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Secretariat of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction of Kyrgyz Republic to strengthen collaboration between the two agencies for promoting disaster risk reduction.

On 29 October 2014 the Chief Executive Officer of DKKV, Mr. Axel Rottländer, and the Head of the National Platform for DRR in Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Bekzhanov Minbolot, signed the MOU and ensured both countries interest to reinforce ties for enhancing role of the national platforms for disaster risk reduction. The MoU states terms on which both institutes will cooperate for consolidating the existing links between the two and reinforce their roles, through appropriate actions and tools that will enable them to fully achieve their disaster risk reduction and management goals on national level.

The collaboration intends to be started with the implementation of the pilot project that focus on national platforms for DRR and stakeholder and is funded by the Federal Foreign Office and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. It aims to increase the capacity of the National Platform of the Kyrgyz Republic for reducing disaster risks in strengthening sustainability of the population and territory of the country to influence of disasters on sustainable development. The results of the project will be presented in Bishkek 2015.

The German Committee for Disaster Reduction (DKKV) is the officially nominated and confirmed National Platform for Disaster Reduction within the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) in Germany. As part of IRDR’s National Committees, DKKV helps in progressing interdisciplinary approach to disaster risk reduction within national scientific and policy-making communities, and serve as important national focal points between disciplinary scientific unions and associations. IRDR National and Regional Committees that have been established so far include: Canada, China, France (AFPCN), Germany (DKKV) and Japan.

DKKV is considered as an exceptional strong IRDR National Committee given its roughly 20 year legacy in facilitating research in DRR and by means of its legitimate basis as National Platform for Disaster Reduction within the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) in Germany.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
