Second Meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific

The Second Meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific took place on Tuesday, 17 March 2015 as a side event during 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The meeting continued the discussion related to developing a basic range of disaster statistics in Asia Pacific as well as on the outline for a compilation guide for disaster related statistics.

The UNESCAP loss data working group was established formally and its structure was defined. The group brought together both risk managers and practitioners as well as officers from national statistical departments. The work proposed by the working group will be eventually endorsed and adopted within governmental departments.

IRDR representative had the opportunity to comment on the Peril classification and hazard glossary work documents and its implementation in other parts of the world and present the Guidelines on Measuring Losses from Disasters document. The community agreed that UNESCAP member states will list the hazard/perils occurring in their countries and report to the IRDR Data working group based on the Peril classification and hazard glossary document . The Guidelines on Measuring Losses report will be evaluated as an additional document that may benefit the working group.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
