Qianhai Consensus was delivered after the International Symposium on Integrated Governance of Large-scale Disaster and Economic Risks

The International Symposium on Integrated Governance of Large-scale Disaster and Economic Risks, held 13-14 May 2017 in Qianhai, Shenzhen, China. This symposium was co-sponsored by 1) Beijing Normal University, 2) Qianhai Shenzhen-Hongkong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone of Shenzhen and 3) Global Risk Forum, GRF-Davos. It was co-hosted by 1) Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, Ministry of Civil Affairs and Ministry of Education, Beijing Normal University, 2) Qianghai Financial Holdings, 3) Qianhai Reinsurance and 4) Future Earth-Integrated Risk Governance Project. A declaration called Qianhai Consensus was delivered after the symposium.[Download]

Prof. Rajib Shaw, on behalf of IRDR, participated this symposium and was the chair of Thematic Session V Assessment of Natural Disaster Risk on “The Belt and Road”. Through panel discussion, key points for risk assessment along Belt and Road were stressed as following:
1) Need to have a balanced approach of demand driven and interest driven risk assessment.
2) Physical, social, economic issues need to be linked for risk assessment, and it needs to be multi-hazard.
3) It is important to strengthen the national and local capacities of risk assessment, and link it to SFDRR indicators, and national platform.
4) In Belt and Road initiative, it is important to link to existing science programs of ICSU, like IRDR, WCRP, Future Earth etc.
During the symposium, IRDR also had a side-meeting with Future Earth Global Hub in Tokyo, IRDR Japan NC and Future Earth IRGP.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
