The 33rd annual IGARSS Symposium in Melbourne (21 – 26 July 2013) will continue the excellent tradition of gathering world-class scientists, engineers and educators engaged in the fields of geoscience and remote sensing. The Symposium’s theme of building a sustainable earth through remote sensing will be tackled through many exciting and varied technical sessions including: the characterization of dynamic Earth processes ranging from surface deformation in volcanic and seismogenic areas; to climate change related coastal zone; wetland and soil vulnerability; through to global forest depletion and food security; utilising technologies such as interferometric synthetic aperture radar and high-resolution optical imaging.

IGARSS2013 includes many high quality presenters at the forefront of international activities in the geosciences and remote sensing. Keynote speakers include Professor Guo Huadong, Director-General of the Centre for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), who will highlight the latest developments in geoscience and remote sensing in the China and Asia-Pacific region, Professor Mike Goodchild, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of California Santa Barbara who will examine the relationship between the remote sensing and the broader GIS communities, and Dr Chris Pigram, Chief Executive Officer of Geoscience Australia, who will cover the latest Australian developments in geoscience and remote sensing.

Dr Peter Staecker, President of IEEE, will also attend the Symposium and will speak at the opening ceremony. Dr Staecker brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the global IEEE activities.

The conference will have a great international exhibition with many organisations showcasing their latest capabilities; technical workshops covering a series of cutting edge areas of science; student tutorials; technical tours; and a number of fascinating social tours covering some of Australia’s best unique attractions.

All are assured of a wonderfully rewarding and interesting visit to IGARSS2013 in Melbourne.
