Addressing DRR in Safeguarding Intangible Culture Heritage

On 5-6 November 2024, the 2024 Sub-regional Meeting on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in East Asia was organised by UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, UNESCO ICHCAP, Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Youth of Mongolia. The theme of the meeting is "Thproe Role of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the face of Climate Change". IRDR was invited to provide insights from DRR perspecitives in integrating climate change and ICH policies.

This meeting convened stakeholders to discuss and develop strategies for adapting intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in response to the challenges posed by climate change, underscored the vital role of ICH in community-based adaptation and resilience-building, emphasised how cultural practices can support communities in navigating environmental changes. Additionally, it identified the specific vulnerabilities of ICH in the face of climate change and explored effective ways to safeguard these practices and knowledge.

The meeting compiled the discussion to develop a set of actionable recommendations for governments and international organisations, aimed at enhancing the adaptation and safeguarding of ICH in our rapidly changing climate. IRDR led the discussion and development of the actions of joint research activities.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
