Senator Loren Legarda to Deliver Keynote Speech at the IRDR Conference 2014

BEIJING— Senator Loren Legarda, renowned legislator from the Philippines, TV news personality and an accomplished environmentalist, will be a keynote speaker at the Integrated Research and Disaster Risk (IRDR) Conference 2014 in Beijing, China from June 7-9, 2014. Legarda will address this year’s theme “Integrated Disaster Risk Science: A Tool for Sustainability”, along with other internationally recognized speakers.

Senator Legarda is an inspiring leader in the global campaign for good environmental governance. In the year 2000, the World Economic Forum held in Davos named her as one of the “Global Leaders for Tomorrow”. Similarly, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) conferred on her the title of UNEP Laureate and included her in the Global 500 Roll of Honor.  She was chosen as “UNISDR Asia Pacific Regional Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation” and a member of the Global Advisory Group of Parliamentarians on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The IRDR Conference 2014 will place emphasis on the importance of science as a tool to address hazard risks and issues of sustainable development. The sessions will address the range of environmental hazards, vulnerability, and sustainability, in both global and local contexts. The IRDR Conference 2014 is being organized by IRDR International Programme Office and China Association for Science and Technology. IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
