18 May 2015

(18 May, 2015) – IRDR’s Rudiger Klein gave a presentation today on the mission, structure and ambitions of the global IRDR programme at Shakhes Pajouh Engineering Institute of Natural Hazards in Isfahan, Iran.

The Shakhes Pajouh Engineering Institute of Natural Hazards with the license from the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT), undertakes its research activities in three research centers: management, geography and civil engineering. Currently, more than 50 faculty members and 200 researchers are directly working in the institute.

MSRT  awarded Shakhes Pajouh Engineering Institute with the best national research center distinction after a series of achievements such as over 150 research projects conducted, 100 scientific papers released, development of comprehensive crisis management plan for towns of Ahar, Varzeqan, Bushehr, etc, holding courses in the field of crisis management, seismic rehabilitation and providing educational animation on earthquake preparedness.

In June 2014, Dr, Iran Ghazi, Research and Technology Vice-Chancellor of Shakhes Pajouh Engineering Institute and Mr Hadi Shahpar attended the IRDR Conference under the theme “Integrated Disaster Risk Science: A Tool for Sustainability,” from 7 – 9 June 2014 in Beijing, China. Dr. Mohsen Ghafouri-Aahtiani, Professor in Earthquake Engineering at Shakhes Pajouh Engineering Institute along with Houman Motamed presented “A Seismic Hazard-Sensitive Model for Urban Land-Use Planning” during the conference. In their paper abstract, it says, “The model presented here is used to find an optimal spatial land use allocation pattern for a defined urban environment. The proposed model can assist urban planners with a hazard-informed land-use allocation in planning new urban settlements or in improving existing urban areas in which changing land-use type may impose considerable cost and inconvenience to the administrative sector. The model has been applied for re-urbanisation of highly vulnerable areas in the south part of Tehran, Iran.” See http://www.irdrinternational.org/conference-2014/programme/risk-reduction-planning/#Mohsen
