Announcement of Faculty Positions of IDMR, Sichuan University – Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR), located at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, invites applications for numerous faculty positions to begin September 2017 or at a mutually agreed date thereafter. Appointments will span the ranks of post-doctoral associate, assistant professor, associate professor and full professor. We will consider exceptional candidates in all areas relevant to the Institute, but we are especially looking for candidates with expertise in the following areas:

• Earthquake resilience and disaster planning
• Ecological approaches to disaster mitigation and response
• Disaster nursing
• Transboundary cooperation on disaster risk reduction and response
• Disaster epidemiology and biostatistics
• Design of disaster-resilient infrastructure
• Integrated urban and rural planning for disaster risk-reduction
• Disaster-related social sciences
• Disaster health sciences, with an emphasis on rehabilitation.

As an interdisciplinary research institute in a major comprehensive research university, our goal is to strengthen our work across a broad spectrum of disaster-related challenges. As such, applications from excellent candidates, particularly at the senior level, in other disaster-related topics are strongly encouraged. In the next two years we expect to hire at least 20 new faculty members.

Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in original research and strong fundamental knowledge in a core area. Faculty responsibilities will include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, developing course materials, student advising, conducting original scholarly research, and supervision of student research. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. by the beginning of employment. The successful candidates shall be provided with a competitive international package of remuneration based on their qualifications, experience and the university regulations.

IRDR proudly celebrates the successful conclusion of the 2025 Youth Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction Hackathon, held in Beijing under the theme “Empowering Youth for a Healthy Planet.” Co-organized with UNESCO, the Horizon Global Youth Development Program and other partners, the event brought together over 300 young innovators from 15 countries to co-develop solutions to urgent environmental challenges.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
