12 June 2021

On June 10, 2021, the IRDR 2021 Conference celebrated the closing session to conclude the 3-day international conference that reports, reviews, and reflects the 10 year IRDR programme. The conference‘s live stream was on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and CCTV, which reached a total of 2.62 million views for the past 3 days.

The closing session also marked the soft launch of the draft of the Global Research Agenda on DRR. This Agenda was commissioned by the International Science Council (ISC) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the development has been led by the Integrated Research on Risk program (IRDR).

As rapid political, social and technological developments add on to the existing planetary change in the society, the global community is certainly facing a rapidly changing risk landscape that include but not limited to pandemic, climate and biodiversity changes, social and financial crisis, digitalisation and hyperconnectivity, and inequalities. Therefore, the Global Research Agenda aims to support ambitious development actions across sectors on disaster risk reduction (DRR) to combat the daunting challenges.

The three components of the agenda include a) a rationale that pictures a new risk-science framework beyond amending present science networks and platforms, b) nine research priorities synthesized from engagement with stakeholders, and c) a non-prescriptive section on implementation that help connect knowledge, policy and practice, and foster innovative thinking and greater research investment. The soft launch of the agenda also signaled the start of the actual implementation of the changes that the agenda sets out.
