IRDR Science Committee Chair Update

ICSU, ISSC and UNISDR, the three co-sponsors of IRDR programme, have approved the nomination of Dr David Johnston as the new Chair of the IRDR Science Committee. Dr Johnston is a Senior Scientist at GNS Science (New Zealand’s Geological Survey) and Director of the Joint Centre for Disaster Research in the School of Psychology at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. He has served on the IRDR Science Committee since 2008. His full bio can be found on the Science Committee page.

The outgoing Chair, Dr Sálvano Briceño, is stepping down for personal reasons. IRDR is grateful for the significant contributions Dr Briceño has made and is happy to announce that he will continue to serve as one of the three Vice-Chairs of the IRDR Science Committee.

This change will be effective January 1, 2013.

Alongside celebrating these achievements, the IRDR is now accepting applications for the 7th batch of the Young Scientists Programme, inviting early-career researchers worldwide to join its interdisciplinary network and advance risk-informed sustainable development.

IRDR will organize the 5th IRDR Young Scientists Lumos "Economics of Disasters and Climate Change: Addressing inequalities, injustices, marginalisation and vulnerabilities" on 7 April 2026. The deadline of applying for presentation is 29 Mar. 2026.

The IRDR International Young Scientists Forum (IYSF) 2026 is a three-day international forum organized by IRDR and mainly hosted by IRDR IPO and IRDR ICoE Coherence. The forum brings early career researchers together to advance disaster risk science and its application to policy and practice in support of the Sendai Framework. Its outputs will assess the contribution of science to Sendai Framework implementation and generate forward-looking insights to inform the post-2030 disaster risk reduction agenda.
