IRDR and UNESCO meet on DRR for Internationally Designated Areas (IDAs)

On May 7, 2024, Prof. Babatunde Rabiu and Ms. Junfei Qian, the review experts of UNESCO to the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO HIST), paid a visit to the IRDR International Programme Office (IPO). The visit was accompanied by Prof. Xinyuan Wang (UNESCO HIST) and Ms. Li Li (UNESCO Beijing Office).

Ms. Fang Lian, the IRDR Science Officer, presented IRDR's mission and activities with highlight on  collaboration with UNESCO HIST. Prof. Qunli Han, the IRDR Executive Director, underlined the growing need of DRR research cooperation for sustainable management of IDAs. designated by  UNESCO.

The experts commended joint activities and deliverables by IRDR and UNESCO HIST. Prof. Rabiu expressed interest in exploring collaborations between IRDR and the African science and technology community in supporting IDAs in Africa.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
