Save the date: III Inter-American Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

Organized by the IRDR ICoE on Understanding Risk and Safety (UR&S) at the National University of Colombia in Manizales, in collaboration with the Manizales University System (SUMA) and the Colombian Society for Disaster Risk Management (SCGRD), the III Inter-American Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation is set to take place in Manizales, Colombia, from May 20th to 24th, 2024.

With over 600 participants from across the Americas, the conference will feature 12 side events and 11 keynote presentations, alongside nearly 160 presentations across three auditoriums. This event follows the tradition of previous Inter-American conferences held in 1994, 2004, and 2015, setting the stage for discussions on the latest advancements in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Professors, researchers, university students, community leaders, consultants, officials from various sectors, and professionals from the Americas are invited to share their knowledge and experiences, as well as the different entities, networks, organizations, and international agencies to hold their collateral events and meetings during the conference.

IRDR commends the successful conclusion of Fudan University's second International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. Supported by IRDR in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the MAP-AQ programme, the three-week flagship program brought together nearly 80 participants from 16 countries, fostering a dynamic global learning community under the theme “Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes.”

UNESCO and IRDR co-organise this lumos at UTC 8:00 on 18 August, which will reflect the research and innovations from young generations with the topics including but not limited (1) vulnerability assessment of cultural heritages (tangible and intangible), (2) integrating traditional knowledge and advanced technologies for climate change adaption and disaster risk reduction, and (3) the role of culture in climate action through education, grassroots initiatives, and policy engagement.
