Co-Chair of Risk KAN Visited IRDR IPO to Strengthen the Collaboration
09 July 2025

Dr. Kai Kornhuber, Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Knowledge-Action Network on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events (Risk KAN), visited the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) International Programme Office (IPO) on 4 July 2025, to enhance the connection of two community and discuss potential collaborations in disaster risk reduction and extreme event governance.

Risk KAN, a joint initiative by Future Earth, IRDR, the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), a comprehensive inter- and transdisciplinary hub for scientists, experts, and communities focusing on multi-hazard risks, disaster risk reduction, and governance of extreme events. IRDR holds an ex-officio position on Risk KAN’s Steering Committee, contributing a core focus on vulnerability and risk analysis, effective decision-making in complex and changing risk contexts.

During the meeting, Dr. Kornhuber provided an overview of Risk KAN’s newly established working groups, which align closely with IRDR’s research priorities as outlined in its action plan. He also extended an invitation to IRDR to participate in an upcoming Steering Committee meeting to explore joint activities and research synergies.

The discussion highlighted opportunities for concrete collaboration in areas such as systemic risk, early warning and building resilience.
