The IRDR International Centre of Excellence of the Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (IRDR-ICoE-SEADPRI UKM) will host a webinar titled "Beyond the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction: Towards Sustainable Development" on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Malaysia Time.

As the international community approaches the final years of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, the global disaster risk landscape is undergoing profound changes. Climate change, rapid urbanisation, biodiversity loss, technological disruption, demographic transitions, and increasingly interconnected and cascading risks are creating new challenges for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.

This webinar will explore how the achievements and lessons of the Sendai Framework can inform the next generation of disaster risk reduction, moving beyond disaster management towards risk-informed, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable development.

Distinguished Speaker

Prof. Rajib Shaw, Professor at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, Japan, Chair of the Asian-Pacific Science, Technology and Academic Group (AP-STAG), and IRDR Fellow, will lead the discussion. Prof. Shaw will examine the convergence of disaster risk reduction with climate action, ecosystem restoration, public health, technological innovation, resilient infrastructure, and inclusive development, with particular emphasis on localisation, science-policy-practice integration, anticipatory action, nature-based solutions, digital transformation, and youth and community leadership.

The session will introduce the vision of **"Resilience by Design"**, where disaster risk reduction is embedded within development planning, investment, education, technology, and everyday decision-making, while considering pathways towards a risk-informed and climate-resilient future beyond 2030.
